What is Slooding?

----------

Slooding is the act of verbose, repetitive, or other forms of voluminous dialogue, usually conducted within real-time internet chat environments, such as on IRC.

While slooding may seem like a bad thing (and often it is!), it is is important to note that not all forms of slooding are undesirable. Some forms may be quite humourous and entertaining.

Here we shall explore the many forms of slooding. Note that there are an infinite number of ways one can slood, so we shall only cover a few selected examples, as illustrated below.

In the above dialogue, "NRGeTiK"" is perfoming a gross act of sloodery by not only typing his gratuitous offer of sex in bold type, but also by repeating his message and underlining key words. This form of sordid slooding has many similarities to an advertising campaign whereby the advertiser tries to draw people's attention to their specific ad by the use of text that stands out against what everyone else is displaying.

Here we have "_isaiah_" making a number of derogatory statements about other users on the IRC channel in a row. While this is clearly an act of sloodery, "_isaiah_" was removed from channel for typing in the name of an IRC channel which is regarded as a form of advertising or spamming. Remember - a slooder always gets what's coming to them in the end.

Slooders often use swear words to draw attention to their speech, and in the above example, "_^^BiANcA^^" is swiftly removed for her use of a banned word.

One thing slooders like to do is to type or paste in huge slabs of song lyrics onto the IRC channel for everyone to read, as "Netz" has done above. What this slooder doesn't realize is that no-one else can hear the song he is playing or singing along to, and minus the music and vocals, some song lyrics dramatically lose their impact, especially for others watching in the channel.

Following on from those slooders who like to paste truck-loads of song lyrics on IRC channels, we have slooders that insist on announcing to the whole channel what the current Mp3 song they are playing on their computer. Heaven forbid if they start singing along to the song as well - that's a double act of sloodery!

Someone who spurts out any file sharing offers or statistics, especially in a general chat channel, is very much a slooder. We're here to chat, not to advertise how many files people have downloaded off us. Slooder be gone!

Well, well, well, who let the slooders out! "sArAh[S2]h0twEz" has gone crazy and floods the channel with a colorful banner. These sorts of banners are usually created on-demand by special IRC slooding scripts which people have loaded and ready to use. Such slooders are often competing with each other over who can display the most colorful and attractive art work on channel. However, for most people, such banners are annoying and detract from the general spirit of IRC chat. "sArAh[S2]h0twEz" was swiftly dealt with, as shown above, after commiting one of the more serious acts of sloodery.

Slooders often grossly over use the cut and paste facilities of their IRC software, thus they often fill the channel with meaningless recycled text. Slooders, like all humans, make mistakes, and in the example above, "^^BiANcA^^" has accidentally cut and pasted part of the IRC initial connection message onto channel for all to see. But maybe this isn't an accident after all - "^^BiANcA^^" is a notorious slooder, as an earlier example shows.

It is a proven fact that alcohol and IRCers don't mix and combining the two can produce outbursts of slood in chat channels. In the example above, "Rachbaby" is clearly intoxicated and thus spurts onto the channel words of wisdom in the form of mis-spelt cries for help and unpronouncable words, in quick seccession. Cheers Rachbaby, you slooder!

Not all slooders are bad slooders. Above we see that "Starla`" is very excited to see everyone, and greets a whole bunch of people individually. Occupying over 50% of the spoken lines, and with up to 4 lines of text in a row, this is clearly sloodery on a massive scale, although it is tasteful and pleasant slooding, and thus most welcome. We love you, Starla`!
